All too often people complain they don’t have time to exercise – your new book squashes this thought – so what would you say to them?
PRIORITISE YOUR HEALTH BEFORE IT PRIORITISES YOU! so many of the health issues we have nowadays are lifestyle related, so building healthy habits earlier on in life prevents you becoming the health problem of the future.
Explain what effect you want your new book, The Pop-Up Gym, to have on people and their perception of exercise?
My hope from the book is that it helps remove some of the barriers to exercise. It's for the "silent majority" of people that don't feel they belong in the gym but still want to engage with movement, keep fit and be healthy. I hope it encourages them to become more active in their lives. Of course, you can take the exercises and apply them to your existing gym routine, but it's primarily a handbook and tool to enable people to just get up and move, NO EQUIPMENT, NO EXCUSES!
For those looking to burn fat and lose weight – which are the best exercises?
Follow the 6 week programme & you'll burn fat and lose weight. The Pop Up Gym incorporates high intensity and easier workouts (vital for recovery), its tough but sustainable, a plan that you should be able to use and adapt over time, you can come back to it and take elements to form your own workouts, but it's better when done in its full format day by day. Oh and read the secrets of fat loss chapter too.
Your book shows that you need little equipment to workout, but what would you suggest people pick up for a better workout?
FAR more important to understand the principles of movement and how your body works, (you get this in the Pop Up Gym) then you always have the only tool you need to train ..... your body! I see so many people in gyms using weights that are too heavy or that they can't control, there is a trend by trainers to load their clients too much at the moment, clients then overtrain or pick up injuries. Its my passion to help fitness trainers become "coaches" and understand the difference between long term health & short term aesthetics. Be creative, think Montessori for Fitness!
How important is it to focus on nutrition as well as exercise when trying to lose weight?
"You can't out-train a poor diet" is one of my mantra's - its VITAL. In actual fact .... the effects of exercise on weight loss are often overstated relative to eating the right foods. Often the government guidelines can lag behind the research which creates a dilemma for the Nutrionist - there is a MASSIVE disconnect here!!, we have a "big" food industry that's not really interested in health, and a healthcare / medical model that is either unable or unwilling to decide what they believe are healthy foods this has led to widespread confusion. Too may health professionals are still pedalling the "calories in calories out" model for instance, helping clients to navigate this world is one of my key roles.
What are your ultimate fitness tips?
Get CONSISTENT - its the number one factor for long term success, too many people go too hard too soon (and too many trainers encourage it) with 20 years experience I know it almost always leads to drop out or injury. What I mean is that GRADUAL CHANGE LEADS TO PERMANENT CHANGE, start slow, and celebrate small successes along the way.
What are your ultimate motivation tips?
Be Your Own Coach. By using my book as your partner, give yourself permission to have fun and go for it!
Develop habits that support your fitness, things I look at in the The Pop Up Gym are ways to develop "social support" from friends and family, making appointments, publicising your goals "putting your dream on the street", getting in control and enjoying your fitness routine, these will lead you to long term success. I live & love the concept that "champions are created when nobody else is watching" sometimes we all need to be prepared to do the hard work, to dig deep to achieve results, Go For It!
