Believe it or not, but drinking red wine could actually help you think, research has found.
The conclusion was reached after a group of 24 adults performed better in mental arithmetic tests after been given resveratrol - the plant chemical found in red wine.
The study, which was carried out by Northumbria University researchers, also found that resveratrol is also linked to other health benefits such as burning off junk food and reducing the risk of heart disease.
Other studies have found that the ingredient can also help combat old age, cancer, obesity, diabetes, and Alzheimer's.
Researcher Emma Wightman said: “It is interesting that a component you come across in many everyday foods can have a positive effect on brain function.”
White wine doesn't carry the same health benefits as it is not made with grape skins and it lacks the required antioxidants.
The findings will be presented to the British Psychological Society's annual conference today.
