New research has revealed that contrary to popular belief, men are more likely than women to turn up at their doctor’s surgery to discuss intimate problems.

A study of 2,000 UK adults found that just 54% of men were embarrassed to talk to their doctor, compared to 71% of women.

The survey was commissioned by the Pharmacy2U Online Doctor service, which offers internet consultations with NHS GPs.   Despite men’s stated confidence in seeing their GP face-to-face, online consultations for advice on erection problems have risen 23% and the topic is the single most popular issue for the service.

Dr Nitin Shori, Medical Director of the service, said: “It’s interesting that men are saying one thing while doing another. On the one hand they say they’re not too embarrassed to see a doctor face-to-face, while on the other increasing numbers are consulting our online service.

“The value of our service is that it’s not just there to spare your blushes. It’s also idea for time-pressed businessmen, who may not have time to book and attend an appointment with their GP, but who need advice about potentially serious health problems.”
