While 90 per cent of men are confident in locating the parts of a car engine, only a half of them are able to identify important areas of their own nuts and bolts.
A study by Lloydspharmacy Online Doctor, aiming to find out men's knowedge of sexual health, found that nine out of ten men said they could correctly locate a car's oil dipstick and radiator, but only six per cent could list all the common causes of Ercetile Dysfunction.
More surprisingly, a third of men incorrectly believed that wearing skinny jeans could cause Erectile Dysfunction and one in ten thought that too much masturbation was a key cause.
When it comes to STIs a lot of men are in the dark, with over a third being unable to spot all key symptoms of common infections. When quizzed on the sex organs, such as locating the seminal veicles - the parts of the body that create semen - only 52 per cent answered correctly, with eight per cent incorrectly pointing to their ear.
Surprisingly, eight per cent of men thought that hot weather can lead to Erectile Dysfunction and three per cent believed that spicy food was a cause.
When listing the common symptoms of STIs three per cent of people said a decrease in penis size and five per cent said dehydration.
Although some answers are comical, there is a serious aspect to the findings, as the latest Health Protection Agency report shows that STI diagnosions are on the increase, with men between 15 and 24 at highest risk.
Dr Tom Brett, sexual health expert at Lloydspharmacy Online Doctor, said: “We all know that two of the most important things for many men are their sex life and their car. If the car’s not performing properly, the British male is usually pretty confident he can get under the bonnet and solve the problem. But when it comes to the mechanics of their sex organs, men are clearly less likely to spot a potential problem. It’s often down to embarrassment and a ‘head in the sand’ attitude.
“We want men to have a better understanding of sexual health problems so that they can reduce their risk and be able to identify an issue before it becomes more serious.
