With holiday season in full swing, many people will be heading off to warmer climates to soak up the sun and switch off from the outside world.
Whilst indulging in the local cuisine and sampling tasty cocktails, it’s also important to remember that the raised sugar levels can have a bad effect on your teeth, so a good oral health care regime is crucial to insuring a glowing smile for those all-important selfies.
Elaine Tilling, Clinical Head of Education at TePe, has given her top tips on how to keep a healthy smile this summer.
Pick away – pop some flexible tooth picks in your bag because they are gentle on the gums and have a non-slip grip, so you can discreetly and easily remove any trapped food and clean between the teeth when you’re on the go. They also come in a handy travel case so there’s no excuse not to keep them on you
Get chewing! - sugar free gum is a great way to freshen the mouth and encourage saliva flow to protect the enamel
Swish - swishing the mouth with water after eating will clear any loose debris and stimulate the saliva to flow. Saliva is nature’s natural cleanser and works to rebalance the acid environment produced in the mouth when we eat and drink
Pack a tongue cleaner – if you are worried about bad breath after all the food, drink and late nights, then take a tongue cleaner to help remove plaque from the surface of your tongue, which can build up and cause bad breath
Protect your lips – Lips are an integral part of a good smile so pack a lip balm to protect from the drying and sometimes damaging effects of the weather when you’re out and about all day. Even better if you apply a lip balm with an SPF to help prevent skin damage!
