Despite the fact that we’re consuming more alcohol and calories and performing less exercise, new research shows that three-quarters of Brits feel healthiest on holiday.
The healthy perception seems to come from our stress-free worries too, the study revealed that 88% claim to be ‘less stressed’ on holiday.
When asked about how their behaviour on holiday compared to when they were back home in the UK 78% of the people polled admitted that they ‘drank more alcohol’ when on holiday than when they were at home, whilst 65% said that they ‘consumed more calories/ate more than normal’ on holiday.
Furthermore, 89% of the people taking part said they did less exercise on holiday than they normally would at home and 55% of the respondents who were smokers said that they smoked more on holiday than when they were at home. Therefore, even though 75% of the adults polled said that they felt healthier on holiday than at any other time, this doesn’t seem to relate to the change in their eating, drinking, exercising and smoking habits.
However, when asked about their stress levels while on holiday, 88% said that they were ‘less stressed’ whilst they were away, suggesting that having fewer worries could be a contributing factor to their all-round healthier feeling. 7% said that they usually felt more stressed on holiday, with common reasons listed as ‘worried about missing work’ and ‘family arguments’.
Chris Clarkson, Managing Director of sunshine.co.uk who conducted the research, said the following:
“People clearly feel healthier on holiday because their stress levels are lower, which is surely a good thing. Who cares if people eat and drink a little more on holiday than they normally would and can’t be bothered to get up for a morning run along the beach? You’re bound to consume a few more calories in the form of cocktails or ice creams, especially on an all inclusive trip, but just prepare to make up for it when you get home!”
