Tomatoes are a super-fruit that we should all be eating more of. But exactly why?
Well, it's packed full of micronutrients, vitamins and antioxidants as a start.
Scientific studies have shown that the more tomatoes you eat, the better.
Tomato products are a good source of vitamins C, A and K; potassium, and fibre – all in a nifty low-calorie, low-fat package.
Findings have also suggest that tomatoes have another nutritional benefit, they're packed with lycopene, an antioxidant that gives them their red colour and may also have a role to play in lowering the risk of cancer.
Studies have shown that lycopene may help to protect against cancers of the prostate, lung, colon, oesophagus, breast and skin.
When tomatoes are cooked, their lycopene content becomes even more available to your body. Your body also uses lycopene better when tomato products are prepared with fat such as olive oil.
Tomatoes and tomato products also provide anti-inflammatory, antiblood clotting effects, as they are nature’s capsules of multiple active ingredients.
