The sun is blaring down, the nights are warmer and the season is finally here where we can grab a nice cold cider and our friends and sit in the nearest beer garden and then party on in to the night. We've all been there! However, all day binging can make us wake up feeling groggy and slightly worse for wear.
Here's are some tips on how to avoid that dreaded hangover:
Do eat before you start drinking. It is important to line your stomach and to eat a fullfilling meal before you pick up the nearest alcholic beverage. Drinking a glass of milk will also help slow down the amount of alcohol absorbed. By lining your stomach before drinking, it helps the digestive system handle the alcohol better as there is less acetaledehyde for the body to handle, which is the main cause of hangovers.
Do keep yourself hydrated. By swapping every second drink for a glass of water will keep the body hydrated. It is also important to drink at least a pint of water before you go to bed.
Do keep your drinks light. It has been proven that toxic chemicals called congeners are produced when alcohol ferments and is one of the main causes of a hangover. The darker the drink the more congeners are likely to be contained in the drink. However, if you have consumed a great quanity of alcohol from light drinks, it is likely you will still suffer from a hangover.
Don't drink too much champange. Champange delivers alcohol to the blood faster due to the carbon dioxide in the bubbles.
Don't drink caffeine based drinks. Caffeine will not sober you up and will cause dehydration and irritation to the bowels.
Do drink pure fruit juice. If you have the shakes, this is due to a low bloor sugar level. Fruit will lift your blood sugar levels and it is packed with vitamin C, which enables your liver to process alcohol.
Don't eat a fry up. Although we all love a good hungover fry-up, it may not be good for your body and may make you feel worse. Digesting fat from the fry-up will add extra strain to the digestive system.
Do go for a walk. Fresh air is the key to cure a hangover as the added oxygen will increase the rate in which the toxins from alcohol is broken down.
Don't drink. Drinking more alcohol when you are hungover can make you feel even worse once the effects from the alcohol have worn off.
