All of the walking and dancing burns lots of calories

Glastonbury and V are the best festivals for a music fan's health, according new research.

Traditionally viewed as 72 hour food & drink binges, research from Withings demonstrates that festival-goers actually burn off over 9,000 calories and walk over 15 miles across a three-day event, providing a surprisingly healthy weekend of hedonism.

Withings conducted research on all the major UK festivals, cross referencing stage and site maps with its innovative activity tracking products, to analyse how much energy music fans expended at the different venues.

The analysis of the top UK festivals revealed the average energy expended per day in the UK's 10 fittest festivals:

1.     Glastonbury – 3,400 calories burnt per day /5.1 miles per person

2.     V Festival –3,100 calories burnt per day /4.6 miles per person

3.     T in the Park – 3,000 calories burnt per day /4.5 miles per person

4.     Reading Festival – 3,000 calories burnt per day /4.7 miles per person

5.     Leeds Festival – 2,900 calories burnt per day/4.6 miles per person

6.     Global Gathering –2,900 calories burnt per day/3.9 miles per person

7.     Creamfields – 2,800 calories burnt per day /4.2 miles per person

8.     Isle of Wight Festival – 2,700 calories burnt per day /4 miles per person

9.     Bestival – 2,600 calories burnt per day /4 miles per person

10.  Lovebox – 2,500 calories burnt per day/3.1 miles per person

The festivals where people burn the most calories are affected by size (how much walking is done each day around the festival on average per person), type of music (dance festivals burn more calories), length (how many days the festival lasts) and camping facilities (distance from the festival).

The festivals where people burn the most calories are mainly attributed to size – the larger the festival the more calories people will burn.  However, the type of music can also have an impact.  Smaller-sized festivals such as Creamfields and Global Gathering have a higher percentage of dance acts, which typically leads to higher level of energy expenditure.

Withings seeded their latest activity tracker, the Withings Pulse O2 (which measures steps, calories burnt, sleep quality, heart rate as well as blood oxygen levels) at Glastonbury to a trial group of participants and discovered:

On average, revelers only slept for a total of six hours throughout the entire festival, losing 18 hours sleep over the weekend as there were too many shows to attend

The average Glastonbury goer spent up to eight hours dancing per day, burning an average of 400-700 calories during each act, resulting in a whopping 1,800 calories burnt dancing per day.  This is how many calories most people would normally burn off in an entire day

Revelers burnt 20% more calories during Dolly Parton's set compared to Skrillex's space rave, despite the difference in tempo!

Julien De Preaumont, Chief Marketing Officer of Withings said, "Festivals are actually a great way for people to burn calories in a fun and relaxed environment. To help people choose which festivals to attend this year we have ranked them based on their fitness potential. Making smart choices can have a serious impact on health. The Withings Pulse O2 is the perfect activity tracker for people who want to reach their health goals and closely monitor their activity."
