It's time to kick-start an active lifestyle

Did you see in the news that lack of exercise is just as deadly for your health as smoking? Guidelines say that each person requires a minimum of 2.5 hours of exercise to stay fit and healthy. It’s so easy to kick start your exercise regime and achieve your weekly exercise target.

REPs registrar, Jean-Ann Marnoch, says: “The news is alarming and the UK is really lagging behind when it comes to staying fit. We need to get serious about fitness and well-being now to avoid a longer-term health crisis. Increasing physical activity has such big benefits to our health and the way we look. We all suffer from the barriers to actually getting physically more active, so here are some tips to include them into your daily life.”

These seven simple steps will get you on your way:

  • Go for it!
Promise yourself that you will never just take the escalator or lift, even if you start with just one flight of stairs then the lift, DO IT.
  • Stuff it! Don’t save piles of stuff to be taken upstairs! Take individual trips and you’ll get fit, fit fit!
  • Sweats Up…
Clean with vigour and get your sweat on!
  • The physical family
Kids love to play, so take them outside! Engaging in kids play is a brilliant way to have fun and keep in tip top shape.
  • Those boots were made for walking
Make walking part of your daily life. Ditch the car and take a stroll!
  • Take weight to lose weight!

Take any opportunity to use weight. Offer to carry someone else’s shopping for them or do someone’s chores. Take all the opportunities to get some weight into your life.

  • Inspiration and perspiration
Get to a REPs registered instructor if you really want to make big changes and choose the activity that will inspire you to keep  active your whole life

Jean Ann concludes: “You only need to exercise the parts of your body that you want to keep healthy, able to move and work for you – the rest you can leave on the sofa!”

A little bit about the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)

REPs recognises and regulates exercise professionals who meet the UKs national standards, to ensure the general public can exercise safely and effectively. It is an extensive register which is available to the general public, offering them over 28,000 listed exercise professionals.

REPs is part of SkillsActive, the government licensed sector skills council for the active leisure and learning industry. It was formed in 2002 by John Greenway MP, the former shadow minister for sport.
