Are you looking for a fitness challenge to keep you motivated as we head into the colder months? The British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) Manchester to Blackpool Night Ride may be exactly what you are looking for.
The bike ride starts from the Trafford Centre from 11pm on Saturday 28th September 2013, then riders leave the city streets behind as you pedal your way through starlit lanes towards the Blackpool illuminations, leading you to the sea to catch the sunrise. You will cover a distance of 52 miles from city to sea.
The event last year saw 1,000 riders take part and use their pedal power to raise over £120,000 to fight for every heartbeat.
Money raised from the ride goes towards the Mending Broken Hearts Appeal, funding vital research that could help to bring hope to millions of people worldwide by finding a cure for heart failure.
Ali Rulton, Event Organiser for the BHF, said: “We love organising the Manchester to Blackpool Night Ride each year. There is such an appetite for cycling at the moment and we always get a great response from the public for this event, both in regard to sign- ups and support. Last year was our most successful year to date, so we’re expecting 2013 to be even bigger and better.”
British Cycling, who are affiliated with the BHF and pledge £4 from every new member registration to the charity, are also encouraging riders to saddle up. Jill Puttnam, National Operations Manager for the Cycling governing body, said: “Since the Tour de France and the Olympics last year, we have seen an unprecedented number of people take to their bikes, whether it is for work, recreation or sport.
“Cycling is a great way to have fun and get fit and healthy at the same time and by getting involved with the Manchester to Blackpool Ride, you’ll be doing something challenging and inspiring for a great cause too.
“With more people taking to their bikes than ever before, we hope to see the BHF’s Manchester to Blackpool Night Ride hit record numbers this year.”
Entries are now open for the Manchester to Blackpool Night Ride, supported by Santander. Entry fees are £30 and individuals or teams can enter. All abilities are welcome, although training beforehand is strongly recommended.
