Kim Kardashian, Lucy Mecklenburgh, Kelly Brook, Miranda Kerr and other Victoria's Secret Angels are guilty of taking pictures during their workouts, and thankfully they are, as research shows that they're spurring us on in our health kick.
George at Asda reports sales of its ‘Athletic Works’ fitness clothing range are up 230% this week and increasing at a rate of 50% day on day as Brits gear up to beat the bulge post party season.
Smug workout selfies from the likes of Kim Kardashian and Lucy Mecklenburgh have provided fit-spiration for gym goers too. Sales of stylish activewear have snapped up by 119% this January compared to last, with 70% of women admitting to wearing accessories and make-up such as lipstick – following in the flirty footsteps of Taylor Swift, as seen in recent glamorous workout snaps.
It’s not just sportswear that’s seen a spike in sales as enviable snaps of toned, bikini clad celebrities such as Cheryl Cole and Rosie Huntington-Whitely have spurred shoppers to stock up on healthy food and snacks. Sales of lettuce, peppers, and avocadoes are up as much as 160% while sales of dried fruit - Katy Perry’s dressing room ‘must-have’ snack - are up 550%.
Sales of home fitness equipment have also seen a celebrity-inspired boost this month. Asda reports that sales of equipment, such as treadmills and cross trainers, are up 132% and fitness accessories including dumbbells and yoga mats are up 106% as shoppers copy Lucy Mecklenburgh’s weight work out and Britney’s yoga routine to get their enviable ‘A list’ abs. With a gym membership costing on average £720 a year, investing in a piece of home fitness equipment can save Brits almost £400 by working out at home.
Spurred on by the dramatic before and after weight loss shots of Geordie Shore’s Vicky Pattinson, savvy shoppers looking for a low cost way to get into shape are plumping for fitness DVDs. Vicky’s 7 Day Slim has become one of Asda’s fastest-ever selling fitness DVD workouts, along with the recent release from TV personality and workout guru Davina McCall with her Davina’s Fit in 15 DVD, which can help shoppers shed the pounds for just £14, without even setting foot in a gym.
Mammy Kufuor, Spokesperson for Asda said: “Whether it be via a ‘selfie’ on social media or in a magazine, celebrities are rarely shy in sharing their gym habits with the nation. After an indulgent festive season, the results of their workout sessions are providing Brits with a little bit of extra inspiration to get back on track with a healthy routine. “
“Looking the part makes everyone feel motivated and with our stylish and functional sportswear range starting at just £5 we are helping shoppers look and feel good while working towards their fitness goals. The innovation and technology stands up against top sports brands but is much more affordable – saving a tidy sum that could go towards an annual gym membership, fitness DVDs or home fitness equipment, which are up to 30% off in our current new year fitness sale to help Brits get A-List abs without the celebrity fitness trainer price tag!”
