Models have been showing off their toned body's at NYFW

New York Fashion Week is taking place at the minute, so there are plenty of images of models strutting their toned and super slim bodies down the catwalks, but what effect is it having?

It's safe to say we're a nation obsessed with body image, and it's not hard to see why.

Whilst the majority of us agree that a balanced diet and good complexion are key indicators of a healthy lifestyle, a survey by Fitness First has found that 70% of Brits aged between 25 and 34 take body inspiration not from a friend or family member, but from the figures of celebrities and supermodels found on the catwalk at London Fashion Week.

The survey reveals that the most sought after body part is in fact a stomach like a model. A whopping 35% of men and women say the stomach is the area they would most like to work on, compared to 8% of those wanting to get their bum in shape, and a mere 3% focussing on their back.

Although a flat stomach is desirable, a skinny frame is not the body shape that women want. The majority of women between 25 and 34 would prefer an hourglass figure like Kelly Brook, suggesting that we are happy to sport a more curvaceous hips, thighs and bust.

"Members are increasingly requesting techniques to work their stomach and abs," explains Lee Matthews, UK head of fitness at Fitness First. "This is one of the hardest areas to get in shape, not helped by the increase in sugar and trans fats found in so much of the food and drink consumed every day. Reports have seen that the most sought after stomachs are that of David Gandy and Elle MacPherson’s flat tum with slight muscle definition"

It seems though, that with age comes more body confidence. Brits over the age of 55 still worry about their stomach, but nearly 80% of them do not aspire to get a figure like a model, celebrity or even their friends and family. They are much happier with the skin that they’re in.
