Breakfast is the best start to the day

Breakfast - the most important meal of the day.

Experts recommend that we start our day by eating a healthy breakfast, to kickstart our bodies and get us ready for the day ahead. We fast during the night whilst we sleep, so it's important to break that fast (get it?!) when we wake up. Eating breakfast also stops the body craving food during the morning, and therefore helps us keep away from high sugar and fatty snacks. It is also crucial to diet success - there is some evidence to suggest that eating it helps people to control their weight.

But when you're rushing around getting the kids ready for school, or trying to find a pair of tights without ladders in them for work, it can be hard to find time to squeeze it in. Here are some quick and tasty breakfast ideas, that everyone can set aside ten minutes to enjoy.

Fruit Salad
A mixture of fruits is a great way to start the day, and they provide plenty of vitamins. You could even prepare it the night before, just pour fresh fruit juice over the chopped fruit, and cover with cling film to stop it from going brown. Dollop some natural yoghurt on top to make it even tastier.

Porridge
It has a reputation as being stodgy, discoloured and tasteless, but we beg to differ. Oats are a superfood, and are rich in zinc, calcium, magnesium and iron - all brilliant for your body. They take a while to digest, so not only will a steaming bowl warm you up, it'll also keep you satisfied for longer. You could also jazz it up a bit by adding your own toppings, such as blueberries or dried fruit.

Smoothies
These are a great way to get some of your five a day, and really easy to prepare. Just throw your chosen fruit (peeled and de-seeded) into a blender with some natural yoghurt and blitz it until it has a smooth consistency. You can add more yoghurt if it's too thick.

Eggs
A boiled egg with wholemeal toast is another great way to fuel your body for the day, and doesn't take too long to prepare. Poached or scrambled eggs on toast are also brilliant breakfast options.

Granola
Bored of cereal? Try some granola, topped with fresh berries and natural yoghurt for a tasty treat.

Cooked breakfast
If you love a fried breakfast but are looking for a low-calorie alternative, try swapping fried eggs for poached, and if you really can't go without bacon, grill it rather than frying. Grilled mushrooms and tomatoes are great too. Add some reduced sugar and salt baked beans to complete this healthier version of a greasy fry up.

These breakfast ideas are all quick and easy to prepare, as well as being tasty and healthy. Accompanying them with a glass of vitamin C-rich fresh fruit juice will help your body absorb iron from the food you're eating much faster.

So there are no excuses - put breakfast back on the menu and see how great you'll feel.
