Your brain eats up 20% of your daily calorie intake in order to stay alert and sharp, so the food you munch on really does have an effect on how well your brain works.
Here, we look at which foods are essential to keep your brain healthy and your mood happy.
1. Salmon - Rich in essential omega-3 fatty acids which help your brain cells engage with each other. The nutritional value of salmon is very good; it's appeared on many of the 'healthiest foods' lists
2. Berries - On every healthy foods list, the antioxidants in berries helps to protect and engage the neurons in your brain.
3. Eggs - High in vitamin B which helps your memory
4. Lean beef - Foods which are high in iron such as lean beef or beans improve your memory and attention.Iron deficiency is common, particularly amongst women, and it affects your learning ability and attention span.
5. Bran cereals/ oatmeal - A healthy to start to any day should include breakfast. Though caffeine will give you a jump out of bed energy boost, it won't provide you with the same nutrients you'd get from a healhty bowl of cereal
6. Water - If your brain doesn't get enough fluid you'll be more prone to headaches and will feel tired. It's essential to stay hydrated during the day to keep your brain in working order.
7. Vegetables - It's common knowledge to try and include your 5 a day into your diet. But vegetables are not only good for your heart, they're also good for your head. A healthy diet with a mix of fruit and vegeatables in probably the best diet advice anybody can offer.
