Consult your doctor if the symptoms persist more than a week

Check your symptoms

Flu can easily be detected with as little as two symptoms. It can be mistaken for the common cold however symptoms appear worse when coming down with the flu.

The early symptoms:

  • Tiredness
  • Headaches
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath

Just two symptoms from the above may suggest flu, and can be cured without a trip to the doctors. Pain killers and relief medicines can be taken at the very first signs of flu.

Am I At Risk?

People suffer flu harsher than others depending on how strong the immune system is (this varies from person to person). However it is necessary to contact your doctor if you are: Pregnant, have a child who is under 10 years old and is suffering these symptoms, or are 65 years and over.

Sufferers who do not come under these groups are more than likely able to treat the flu with bed rest and plenty of water. If symptoms persist longer than a week, consult your doctor.

The difference between the common Flu and Swine Flu.

It can be hard to tell the difference between the two because of how similar the symptoms are. Swine Flu symptoms are more extreme in comparison which makes it important that a person with Swine Flu is quarantined in bed to stop the spread of infection.

To avoid infection, take similar precautions when defending against common flu.

  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Cover nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing
  • Dispose of dirty tissues immediately

If symptoms persist more than a few days and you think you may have Swine Flu, contact the NHS direct by phone for more advice.

Is it contagious?

Yes. In most cases it is likely spread within the home, which can be hard to avoid. Unfortunately it is difficult to avoid the flu because of how common it is.

On the bright side…

If diagnosed with flu, you are advised to take time off work and rest until symptoms are cleared.

Drink plenty of water which will help flush away the virus.

So all it comes down to is to rest and relax. It’s such a hard life!
