The NHS recently revealed that more and more people are choosing surgery as a form of weight loss. Figures indicate that weight loss operations have risen 12 per cent in the last year alone.
Over 8,000 overweight adults in Britain last year went under the knife to get rid of excess body fat.
It was found that obesity treatment like gastric bypass, stomach stapling and sleeve gastrectomy are preferred by people over slimming pills like Xenical.
The industry-leading Consultant Bariatric Surgeon, Mr Marcus Reddy gives his views on the figures.
Bariatric surgery is one of the signature surgical procedures at Bodycraft and is recognised as a proven way to achieve significant and long-lasting weight loss.
1. Are you surprised by the data that reveals there has been a 12 per cent rise in weight loss operations?
No. Excessive body weight is a common problem in our current times. We recognise that it has many effects both on a physical health but also our quality of life and self- esteem.
2. Why do you think that there is an increase?
The procedures have become much safer and are now performed by key-hole surgery which reduces the impact of the surgery and speeds up the recovery.
3. Do you think that people are becoming reliant on this as a form of weight loss?
No, after a lot of dieting and trying weight loss medication, the option of a procedure to support weight loss becomes necessary to achieve and sustain weight loss.
4. What are the dangers of one of these operations?
The dangers are similar to many surgical procedures and there are specific risks related to the type of weight loss procedure one is undergoing. When performed by an experienced team the risks are very low.
5. Do you think that they are a successful means of weight loss?
The results are proven to be successful in clinical trials where many thousands of patients have undergone procedures for weight loss compared to non-procedural weight loss techniques of dieting, therapy and medication.
