As summer holiday season approaches, many of us will be dreaming about our midyear getaways, but how many of us have started thinking about how to stay healthy when away?

A great holiday can be ruined by a bout of illness once we reach our destination, and many of us know what it’s like to pick up a bug, an upset stomach that lasts for days, sunburn and even more serious and long-term ailments.

For some of us planning to head to more intrepid and off the beaten track locations, diseases like malaria and dengue fever are a real and life threatening risk so it pays to know what you’re up against and prepare accordingly before you go abroad this summer.

A recent survey shows the number one worry of travellers before they head away on holiday is a bout of diarrhoea, followed by sunburn, stings from insects and tropical diseases. In fact 14.6 million days of holiday were lost to diarrhoea in the last year by Brits travelling abroad.

Luckily with a bit of planning and preparation, a clued up traveller can make sure they are prepared for any of these holiday nasties.

So what do you need to think about before you head away? What research do you need to do about the local health providers in the area you are holidaying in so if things do go wrong you know exactly where and how to access medical help?

What regulations should you be aware of when it comes to taking medicines into foreign countries?

In our podcast Dr Tom Brett, Lloydspharmacy Online Doctor and Tom Hall from Lonely Planet reveal everything you need to know about holiday health this year, from preparation and danger spots to what to pack.
