Our teeth are with us for life - well, after the age of around 10, they're with us for life - so they need protecting, just as much as we protect our skin in the summer or our hair from heated appliances.

New research reveals that 18.6 million people in the UK currently experience painful tooth sensitivity and that over half of the population will suffer it at some point in their lives.

Sensitive teeth can be aggravating and an annoyance - you come to learn that you have to avoid particular foods in order to keep it at bay and make sure that the drinks you consume are of a particular temperature.

Michael Wheeler a dental hygienist based in Bristol says: "As people are now keeping their teeth longer, tooth sensitivity is becoming a serious problem. My patients are becoming increasingly aware of teeth sensitivity and are looking for instant relief as a result."

Seventy-five per cent of UK adults also fear loss or thinning of tooth enamel - more than any other oral health problem including tooth loss.

The easiest way to protect against these factors, is to change just one small thing - your toothpaste.

Colgate sensitive pro-relief multi-protection instantly blocks the channels to the nerve to prevent sensitivity before it starts. Nine out of 10 UK dentists who tried the toothpaste would recommend it.

Gary Smyth, a Dentist from Wigan says: "After initial use with Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief Multi-Protection toothpaste, my patients told me that there was an instant and noticeable effect. I now recommend Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief as the first line of treatment for sensitive teeth."

UK experts suggest that tooth sensitivity is increasing - common causes include:

Food and drink which is cold, hot, sweet, acidic (including alcohol)

Harsh or inappropriate brushing which can damage the gums

Extreme temperatures, eg. wind

Teeth whitening or bleaching products

A cracked tooth
