Teen girls found to be eating only half of their daily fruit and veg allowance

Teenage girls are the forerunners with the worst diets, according to new research.

Not only are these bad diets affecting their health and enerfy levels now, they have to put some thought into what they're putting in their mouths because it will greatly effect them later on in life.

The National Diet and Nutrition Survey revealed that teenage eating habits are generally poor, with females being less nutrious compared with their male counterparts.

Chief Medical Office Professor Dame Sally Davies says: "It is really important that teenagers eat a well balanced diet - inlcuding eating five portions of fruit and veg a day. Eating well and being active help prevent serious illnesses such as cancer and heart disease in later life."

They were found to be eating only half of their recommended daily allowance of fruit and vegetables and just 56 per cent were seen to get the adequate amount of iron in their diets.

The research, led by the National Centre for Social Research and MRC Human Nurtition Research, warned that the poor eating habits can lead to health worries late in life.

Things like heart disease and cancers can be affected by their diet choices now.
