Tests show the activity helps normalise blood-sugar levels in people with diabetes and enhances the immune system
Tai Chi for Therapy, Wales is one of 10 Lottery-funded projects in the Best Health Project category of this year's National Lottery Awards, in association with FemaleFirst.co.uk
The benefits of Tai Chi are numerous: "It seems to be good for everything!" says instructor Celia Brown, who runs Tai Chi sessions for older people in Harlech, Wales. Lottery grants have enabled Celia to undergo training in Dr Paul Lam’s course, which is specially adapted for people who need a gentler form of exercise, including those with arthritis and other problems related to muscles, bones or joints.
Celia holds weekly sessions in relatively isolated areas, making Tai Chi more accessible for those unable to travel further afield. Tests show the activity helps normalise blood-sugar levels in people with diabetes and enhances the immune system. It’s also good for relaxation, and improves flexibility, which can reduce the pain suffered by people with arthritis. It also helps improve co-ordination, and research has shown it reduces the risk of older people falling over by 47%.
Some students have found the improvement in flexibility means they can cut down on the amount of painkillers they take, and some have been able to stop taking painkillers altogether. Others report a greater ability to focus their thoughts, better sleeping patterns, and generally improved wellbeing and happiness. "The social element is also important," Celia says. "Being able to get out of the house and meet other people makes a big difference."
Celia’s particularly pleased that many members now practice regularly at home, and reports that "they’re always looking forward to the next bit." Compared to other options, such as physiotherapy, people tend to keep going with Tai Chi for longer, she says.
Student Dave Rowley started the class aged 69, after his wife died unexpectedly. "I never thought I’d overcome the grief," he says, "but the Tai Chi course has helped me put positives back into my life."
