We all know how important it is to look after our skin in the sunny weather, but that doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice on our tan.
Dr Hilary Jones, the famous TV doctor, shares his tips and knowledge on how we can ensure that we stay safe in the summer heat and rays.
“It’s a simple truth but the key to avoiding sun damage is to avoid burning your skin, especially if you are fair skinned and have lots of moles,” explains Dr Jones. “ It takes no time at all for unprotected skin to burn in the sun and even short periods of intense exposure to strong sunlight (like you experience while sunbathing) can increase your risk of malignant melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer.
“Sun damage is also one of the key factors in skin ageing which is worth keeping in mind as the damage caused will not be immediately obvious! Look at the skin of a serious sun worshipper though and the evidence will be clear to see.”
Summer heat can leave you with dehydrated distressed skin. The Eau Thermale Avène Spring Water Spray is the perfect solution providing a cooling mist of calm for sensitive skin.
The unique properties found in the Avène water have been clinically proven to soothe and soften skin. It leaves a film of silica on the skin protecting the surface and leaving it feeling soft and comfortable. Thanks to the low mineral content in the water, as well as its pH 7.5 (almost neutral) balance, does not sting, burn or dry out skin and can be used on broken skin. It can also alleviate sunburn or prickly heat.
Available from Boots in 150ml can (£6.50) or a handy 50ml spray (£3.15).
Dr Jones continues: “The sun can not only burn the skin, but can also contribute to skin sensitivity. Even people who do not normally have sensitive skin can find that their skin is more sensitive in the summer – itchy prickly skin, redness, raised bumps and blotchiness can all be caused by exposure to the sun.
“When it comes to a suitable suncare range for sensitive skin the Eau Thermale Avène suncare range with its unique SunSitive formula offers high level protection suitable for all skin types but especially sensitive or hypersensitive skin.”
Eau Thermale Avène suncare products benefit from an innovative SunSitive® protection system, which means that they are suitable for use by all, even those who suffer with the most sensitive skin complaints including eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, acne or irritated skin.
The range combines Avène Thermal Spring Water with Photoprotective filters to offer a broad spectrum of protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Infused with powerful anti-oxidant Pre-tocopheryl (a form of Vitamin E) to raise the skin’s defences against free radicals, preventing cellular damage responsible for skin ageing, the formula is highly water-resistant and contains no parabens or alcohol.
