A report which was published in Chemical and Research and Toxicology suggests that damage to the body begins within minutes after a cigarette has been smoked. The research was carried with 12 patients who smoked and scientists focused on the chemicals Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH). PAH was added to the cigarettes which turned into a new chemical that affects the DNA. What is so shocking about this research is how quickly the damage occurs after just one cigarette. The health warnings are out there, but is this new piece of research going to make smokers more aware about their health? Martin Dockcrell, director of policy and research at Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) said: "The chilling thing about this research is that it shows just how early the very first stages of that process begin - not in 30 years but within 30 minutes of a single cigarette for every subject in the study." If you're considering to quit smoking visit the NHS website for more information. The research was funded by the National Cancer Institute. Naomi Havergal
