A consumer poll by Boots has shown that less than one in five (17 per cent) of Brits are eating the recommended two portions of fresh (not tinned) oily fish a week.

The many health benefits of polyunsaturated fatty acids of the omega 3 family have been recognised for so long that many companies now add omega 3 fish oils to many daily products like milk, spreads, juices and yogurts, helping Brits to raise their consumption of omega 3.

Nick Bennett, Boots Positive Healthcare Technical Expert says: "Essential Fatty Acids (omega 3 and 6) are one of the important groups of nutrients needed in the body. Fatty fish are a great source of the most active forms of omega 3 fats which have many important roles throughout the body such as building blocks for the brain and the nervous system.

"As many people do not consume sufficient omega 3 in the diet in any form let alone the important EPA and DHA found in fish, fish oil supplementation is an excellent way to maintain a healthy level in the diet."
