A poor understanding of nutrition, lack of exercise and little fresh food are all contributing to the shocking rise in liver deaths in the North West according to singing star Linda Nolan who was brought up in Blackpool and still lives in the area.
“The Chief Medical Officers report this week that deaths from liver disease have risen by one fifth whilst they are falling in all comparable European countries is obviously devastating,” said the 53 year-old who has recently made changes to her own diet and lifestyle.
“The saddest fact is that these deaths are almost entirely self inflicted. Alcohol consumption obviously plays a large part but diet, lack of exercise and diseases associated with being overweight like hepatitis B and C are also culprits,” she said.
Professor Dame Sally Davies’ report highlighted rising obesity levels throughout the UK but pointed to particularly high and increasing levels in the North West, Midlands and some parts of the South East.
To get her own body in top condition and boost her vitality Linda Nolan has joined forces with one of the fastest growing weight loss companies, Boossh: which is the new fashionable way to lose weight faster whilst staying healthy.
“Using fully fortified nutritionally balanced ‘MealPaks’ is so easy for me, but the best thing about Boossh is you can enjoy all the healthy food and snacks on the Boossh lists. It is easy to follow and easy to stick too! It is important to me not to use any of these crash diets, and Boossh is certainly the answer for me,” said Linda.
“Eating a low GI and low carbohydrate diet is a scientifically proven weightloss method and as long as subjects adhere to Boossh portion sizes they will maximise their body’s fat-burning process,” said Sue Norton - dietician to Boossh.
“By combining ‘Meal Paks’ with healthy and delicious foods from individually planned lists Boossh makes loosing weight an enjoyable experience,” she said.
Linda Nolan has fought her own battle with ill health and was given the all-clear from her breast cancer five years ago following surgery and extensive chemotherapy.
She is also still grieving the loss of her manager husband and soul mate Brian, but she has always been determined to show women throughout Britain that life can go on after trauma and she is now determined to become a foster mother.
“I just hope that I can give strength to other women who have been through adversity in life and show them that, with time, things can, slowly, get better,” said Linda.
The one thing in life that Linda regrets is that she has always put her career before having a family. Now, the 52-year-old is determined to put that right by applying to be a foster parent.
'I hope I will be given the chance to show some children that people can love you and that you can feel safe and happy with the adults who look after you.
'All children should feel that - I certainly did - but sadly, it's not the case for some,' she said.
Linda now raises money for the Samaritans (who supported her in the dark days) and cancer charities. “I'm lucky that I can give something back because of my showbusiness life,” she says.
Success for the Nolans started in 1979 when their hit ‘I’m in the Mood for Dancing’ topped charts worldwide. Since then they have sold 25 million records and their hits include ‘Attention to Me’, ‘Who's Gonna Rock You’, ‘Don't Make Waves’ and ‘Gotta Pull Myself Together’.
They have also sold over 9 million records in Japan – which even tops the Beatles.
Linda had hoped to join her siblings Maureen, Bernie and Coleen when the Irish singing super-group embarked on their final tour of the UK (which was to be called ‘In the Mood for Dancing... ONE LAST TIME’) in February and March next year but their plans had to be cancelled when they received the heart breaking news that Bernie had been re-diagnosed with cancer.
The family will be spending time together and Bernie is determined not to give in to the disease.
Millions of fans, well-wishers and everybody connected with the Nolans will be rooting for her.
