You are urged to take care in the cold weather as temperatures continue to drop and the risk of norovirus is on the up.
Known as the winter vomiting bug it can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach cramps. The symptoms usually last two or three days.
Dr Nick Read, leading consultant gastroenterologist and medical advisor for the Gut Trust, said: “Norovirus is highly contagious and strict hygiene is essential. It is really important to try and reduce the risk of catching the virus or passing it on to others.
“If a person does become infected they should ensure they drink plenty of water and stay hydrated, as well as try to relieve some of the discomfort from symptoms like diarrhoea.”
You can catch the bug through coming into contact with somebody infected, or contaminated surfaces or objects.
