Mornings have a rough life, no-one says anything bad about afternoons. That’s why Belvita Breakfast biscuits are campaigning for better mornings for all and who better to offer top tips for a better morning other than Radio DJ Lisa Snowdon.
Lisa Snowdon’s Top Tips for a Better Morning:
- Eat breakfast: “I could literally not function without it. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day - absolutely without a doubt for me.”
- Have 8 hours sleep: “Have a really good night’s sleep so you wake up perky and full of the joys of spring.”
- Listen to music: “Listen to a song that you love, tune into your favourite radio show to put you in a really great mood.”
- Plan your meals: “My typical daily diet involves a lot of food and a lot of planning. I get up in the morning and I have hot water with lime, then I make fresh fruit juice with vegetables including beetroot, cucumber, celery, apples, pears and ginger. I take boiled eggs with me in my bag. I have a selection of Belvita Breakfast biscuits - bearing in mind I’m up really early at 4:30, I start having breakfast at about 6am.”
- Variety: “Keep it varied so it’s interesting to eat and make sure you eat a balanced breakfast – this will keep you going for longer. I have everything in moderation, treat yourself a bit. Eat three meals a day with a few snacks.”
Leading nutritionist, Fiona Hunter’s Top Tips for a Better Morning:
Don’t skip:
- “There’s a good reason why most nutritionists consider breakfast to be the most important meal of the day and yet 1 in 2 people skip breakfast.”
Energy for the morning:
- “Breakfast, as the word suggests, literally means ‘breaking the fast’ and after 10 – 12 hours without food your body and more importantly, your brain, need fuel to fire them up in preparation for the day ahead.”
Health benefits: “
- A healthy balanced breakfast will set you up for the morning ahead, in fact studies show that what you eat at breakfast can have an impact not just your long term health but your mood, memory and your weight.”
On the go: “
- Breakfast doesn’t have to mean a full blown meal and it doesn’t have to be a meal eaten at home. if you can’t face eating anything in the morning or you don’t have the time to eat before you leave the house take your breakfast with you – that way you won’t be tempted by less healthly options along the way. If you need to get up and out of the house as quickly as possible in the morning make sure you’ve got all the stuff you need for breakfast organised the night before.”
Balanced start to the day: “A healthy balanced breakfast should provide between 20-25% of your daily calories and nutrient intake (for a woman eating 2000 calories a day that would be between 400-500 calories). It should provide a mix of slow release carbohydrates, which provide a regular release of carbohydrate throughout the morning along with wholegrain cereals, some milk or yogurt to provide calcium and a portion of fruit.”
