Eating things like whole grain breads have been found to cut the risk

We're all aware the benefits of eating a high-fibre diet and what it does for our gut, but new research has also foudn that it can also protect against bowel cancer.

Researchers from Imperial College London found taht for every 10g a day increase in fibre intake, there was a 10 per cent drop in the risk of bowel cancer.

This however doesn't extend to fibres obtained from fruits and vegetables, only cereals and whole grain fibres - things like whole grain breads, brown rice, cereals, oatmeal and porridge.

The researchers found a 'linear association between dietary fibre and colorectal cancer' - this is what bowel cancer is also known as.

The average intake of fibre in Britain is only 15 grams a day, but experts recommend adults should be eating between 18 and 24 grams.

Bowel cancer kills around 16,000 people in Britain each year, which is more than breast or prostate cancer.
