Hearing is set to affect millions

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has predicted that by 2030 adult onset hearing loss will be in the top ten disease burdens in the UK, costing the economy billions.

With one in six of the population already suffering, Specsavers hearing centres is asking Brits to think about their hearing this World Health Day, Saturday 7 April.

Specsavers audiologist, Colin Campbell, says: ‘Hearing loss is a major public health issue affecting more than ten million people in the UK and this number is set to grow to 14.5 million by 2031. Hearing loss can have significant repercussions, such as isolation and depression. It’s vital that we look after our hearing now and that includes getting into the habit of regular hearing tests. With the hearing time bomb ticking, it’s certainly something we can’t afford to ignore.’

A hearing test can also detect tinnitus, which is a ringing in the ears; ear wax build-ups, known as cerumen blockages, and more serious conditions such as tumors in the middle ear, or cholesteatoma.

Hearing tests at Specsavers are free, without obligation and recommended every two years for those over the age of 55 and, if a loss is detected, annually thereafter.
