Mushrooms have great health benefits

Eating healthy should be a way of life, and thanks to encouragement from celebrities more and more people are taking to it, the latest healthy food fad is mushrooms.

Starlets are eating mushrooms to help amintain their super sexy slender figures.

Katy Perry confesses her love for the vegetable, ‘eating a ton of a wide variety of earthy treats to help her keep slim’, while Kelly Osbourne is keeping the pounds off following her public battle with her weight by eating mushrooms for breakfast.

Emmerdale and Waterloo Road star Roxanne Pallet dropped two dress sizes revealing that raw mushrooms are the secret to keeping her figure in ‘ship-shape’.

Even Corrie’s Catherine Tyldesley said that the vegetable was a staple of her diet which helped her turn from frump to fox.

It seems UK consumers are recognising the power of the vegetable as sales reach an all-time high (+3.8%) with the market worth £365 million, according to data released.

A spokesperson, said: “UK consumers’ confidence in eating the vegetable has increased dramatically what with household names affirming the nutritional benefits and revealing their diet tips to slimming naturally.

“Advocates, such as celebrity chefs James Martin and Ed Baines continue to create sumptuous new dishes inspiring families to cook more with mushrooms.

“The many varieties of mushrooms provide unique and impressive flavours, not to mention a fantastic texture that compliments most savoury cuisines, which is why Britain is now spending more than £1 million a day on the vegetable.”

Supermarkets are increasing supplies as head of households learn that the versatility of the mushrooms in dishes adds depth and flavour to the family’s meal-time repertoire, especially where some are living on a shoe-string budget.

Quickly climbing the UK’s list of 10 best-selling vegetables, mushrooms now rank third after potatoes (No.1) and tomatoes (No.2) with roughly 118,000 tonnes of mushrooms having been sold in the last year.

Mushrooms have so many B vitamins they could make a tomato blush as TV’s Dr Christian Jessen, explains:

“The vegetable is an excellent source of B vitamins which are needed for a healthy diet and an 80g serving counts towards one of your five a day.

“Mushrooms are especially good for anyone trying to lose weight given they are exceptionally low in calories and fat. Plus, the high levels of dietary fibre in the vegetable leaves you feeling satisfied for longer.”
