The shopping list seems to continue to grow

There's no need to worry about eating that extra mince pie this afternoon, because the chances are you're going to work it off pounding the High Street looking for presents.

According to new research, the average Brit will walk more than a marathon this Christmas.

Despite the rise of internet shopping, research released by The Sanctuary Spa, reveals that Brits will still cover an averaged of 30 miles when scouring the high street in the run up to Christmas.

The study, which looked at the nation’s festive shopping habits, showed that Christmas shopping can be a dangerous activity with one in five Brits admitting to suffering back problems after an arduous day at the shops.

The most common ailment suffered by Brits is headaches, with a staggering 40% claiming they had endured one after a long day shopping.

The study showed that a quarter of the population will spend up to three full days wandering around the shops on the hunt for perfect presents; whilst a dedicated one in ten will spend a whopping seven days picking out gifts for their loved ones.

Katherine Bell, The Sanctuary’s Senior Spa Therapist, said: "Christmas shopping can really take its toll on your body. People walk huge distances without realising it and are invariably carrying a number of heavy bags, which puts a strain on your body.

"Some women also do this in heels, adding to the potential for injury and pulled muscles. People need to take care of themselves when out Christmas shopping so my advice would be: drink plenty of water to avoid headaches, wear flat shoes, don’t try to carry too much and stop regularly to rest."

Anyone planning to hit the shops this festive season should be prepared to kiss goodbye to at least one hour 30 minutes of precious shopping time every day; as the average Brit will spend this much time in queues over the Christmas period.
