Ever wondered how a surgeon manages to keep a steady arm? Listening to rock music apparently.
In a survey amongst UK surgeons 90 per cent of respondents confirm that they listen to music while operating on patients and while the majority say they use it to create a harmonious and calm atmosphere, a third of them say they do it do stop themselves from getting bored.
The surgical survey was conducted to celebrate the release of House Season Seven on Blu-Ray and DVD, which stars Hugh Laurie as medical maestro, Gregory House.
Rock music ranks as the most popular genre for surgeons with nearly half choosing up-tempo tunes to help them relax, followed by pop and classical.
The survey also reveals that 15 per cent of UK surgeons consult their patients to find out what they'd like to listen to while they're out for the count.
Plastic surgeons are the most prolific players of music at work with all of those surveyed saying they always listen during surgery. Ear, nose and throat surgeons listen the least. Despite most surgeons turning on the tunes only 15 per cent admitted to singing or humming along to their favourite track during theatre.
