You’re supporting the Cerumol ‘Hearing Clear’ campaign, why did you want to get involved with this?
About three years ago now I burst my ear drum, and it was horrible, the pain was dreadful. So, I just want people to be more ear-aware really. It’s very easy to stick things down your ears to clean your ears out but Cerumol is a very natural and gentle way to clean your ears out.
I had a terrible experience when I burst my ear drum, it was weeping stuff, puss and blood; it was a horrible experience which left my with a bit of Tinnitus for about six weeks afterwards too.
How do you care for your ears now?
I make sure that I keep my headphones very low. There is yet another report out which states that you must not listen to loud music through your headphones because it’s very, very damaging to your ears. When it’s very cold weather, I put cotton wool in my ears. My ears are very sensitive now, so I just make sure that I’m always looking after them.
What sort of things do you do to stay in shape?
I do pilates and I go to the gym. Pilates completely saved me because I have a really bad back, I absolutely love it. Years ago I did yoga, I think that’s very good for your mind. Pilates is really good for your body, it works on the core. But I also go to the gym, I love working out.
Do you follow a strict diet?
I have to eat wheat-free, because I have a wheat allergy and I don’t eat meat, except for chicken if it’s free range and organic I am quite strict about those sorts of things. But there is no saint in me, I enjoy a couple of glasses of wine at the weekend, but I am very healthy.
Both of my parents had cancer, my mum died 15 years ago and my dad survived cancer, so I decided to put real work into learning about nutrition and about health. I think it’s so important. Now, all of the stuff that I’ve been working on and researching for years it’s all coming out that we need to be caring for our insides too. It’s not all about the outside, it’s about what you put in.
You’ve mentioned your wheat allergy, when did you find out about that and how has it impacted on your diet?
I’ve probably had it all of my life, but we didn’t know. But I had problems with my breathing and I used to get dreadful stomach cramps and then about 17 years ago I went to see somebody because I just couldn’t bare it anymore. Now I’m very careful, and I check everything but I’m used to it. It means that I eat incredibly healthy. Nothing is ever coated in breadcrumbs or flour, all of those things.
