The drug increases the risk of narcolepsy

A flu vaccine that is used on thousands of children must not be given to them, health watchdogs report.

The drug, Pandemrix, dramatically increases the risk of narcolepsy. This disorder makes people fall asleep suddenly and unexpectedly.

The study carried out, by the European Medicines Agency says research shows a six to 13-fold higher risk of narcolepsy in children and adults vaccinated with the drug.

Researchers say that the effects seem to be permanent, but added that they need to study the children for longer.

Pandemrix was the most used vaccine in the UK during the 2009/10 flu pandemic.

An increases risk has not been found in people over 20 and the EMA says that the drug can still help adults.
