Motorists across the UK could be risking potential health issues as they avoid using air con (A/C) systems in an attempt to save money during the credit crunch.

Unclean and un-used A/C systems can cause a variety of health problems for drivers and passengers including asthmatic difficulties, hayfever, coughing and sneezing, not to mention actually increasing their overall fuel consumption.

In an attempt to reduce the problems associated with unclean A/C systems and to save motorists money, Nationwide Autocentre is working to dispel some widespread air con myths and provide advice on how best to maintain these systems.

The current credit crunch crisis is putting a lot of pressure on motorists to save money any way they can and A/C systems appear to be an easy target. Many assume that they cost a fortune and that by leaving them switched off they can save money with no maintenance required. In reality, ad-hoc use of A/C systems can actually increase the cost of fuel consumption as substances can build up to form blockages, reducing the A/Cs efficiency when it is used.

When A/C systems are left dormant they can make an ideal nesting place and breeding ground for bacteria, fungus, mould and even ecoli. This can lead to unpleasant smells and allergic reactions such as coughing and sneezing. In worst cases it can cause increased aggravation to those suffering with chronic breathing problems such as asthma.

In order to raise awareness of the issues surrounding unclean air con systems, they are calling on garages up and down the country to provide more comprehensive advice and support on how best to keep these systems clean.

Air conditioning cleaning is currently not included as part of standard vehicle servicing in the UK, but garages should still be advising their customers on the potential problems associated with them.

Advice for A/C use includes:

* Use your A/C system regularly, not just in summer months ? it still provides the quickest way to de-mist windows

* Ensure your A/C system is cleaned once every twelve months ? this costs around £70

* Have your A/C system checked and re-gassed regularly to minimise any impact on fuel consumption.
