Brits are traveling overseas to keep their smiles in good condition

Today's claim by the Tories that the NHS is overcharging for dental work has reinforced the belief the UK dental system is becoming unaffordable.

Each year 43,000 Britons travel abroad for dental treatment. The high cost of UK treatment is a major factor driving people to search for more affordable alternatives. In Hungary, for example, savings of up to 70% are achievable on UK prices.

Smile Savers Hungary has led the field in dental tourism for over five years. The company was set up by Simon Purchall after he lost a number of teeth in a motorbike accident. He said: "I was quoted a huge amount to sort it out. Then I met my wife, who is Hungarian, and I went to a dentist over there. I was amazed by how good it was and the savings I made."

NHS dentists have been accused of exploiting loopholes in the charging system. With Smile Savers Hungary each patient is given a consultation and clear cost estimate, before leaving the UK - there are no hidden charges. The UK NHS dental service has been constantly criticised since the implementation of the new dental contract back in April 2006.

Louise Webb, 42, Stoke-on-Trent, travelled with Smile Savers Hungary for extensive implant and crown work. She spent £12,000 on her treatment, saving an estimated £45,000 on UK prices. She says: "I was in a lot of pain before treatment. My dentist had said the only option for me was false teeth, at my age I couldn't believe it was my only choice. I felt let down by the NHS because it's a hereditary condition - it's not my fault my teeth are like this and I pay my tax and national insurance like everyone else.

"I could never afford implants here. I managed to get them done in Budapest for just under £12,000 and it was the most amazing place. There were so many people there from the UK who couldn't afford treatment here, or didn't even have an NHS dentist. I don't know why it is so expensive here."
