Protect Your Hearing Health During The Holiday Season..
The summer season is fast approaching and for many this signals a time of music festivals and dusting off the lawnmower and d.i.y power tools. While spirits may be raised as people spend more time outdoors, there is something that all these activities have in common: they can all be damaging to your hearing health unless you take precautions.
The volume of music played at concerts and festivals will vary but will most likely average around 110 decibels. By way of a comparison, a normal conversation is 60-65 decibels and a high volume is classified as over 80 decibels, a level similar to standing at the side of a very busy road. Regularly going to festivals and listening to music at such high volume levels can cause damage to hearing over time. If the damage is moderate to severe people may find it hard to hear conversations or even their alarm clock.
Wendy davies, national sales & audiology manager at siemens hearing instruments, states, “finding it necessary to shout to make yourself heard at a gig, experiencing ringing in the ears, or if your hearing simply feels diminished following a concert, are all warning signs to watch out for. Take a break of five to ten minutes regularly to allow your ears to recover and also consider investing in some ear plugs when going to live music events. Remember, your hearing is for life not just for the summer!”
The summer season and bank holidays offer the perfect opportunity to finish the diy projects that were pushed to the backburner during winter, and the sound of lawnmowers and hedge trimmers become commonplace across front and back gardens. It is vital that people are aware of the importance of protecting their ears when carrying out work in their home or garden. Wendy states, “always wear ear protectors if you are using any household and garden power tools including hedge trimmers, gas or electric powered lawnmowers, floor sanders, drills and saws. Regular exposure to loud equipment such as these can cause damage to hearing over time.”
