Having an alcoholic drink before bedtime was believed to help you get to sleep and have a better nights rest, well not anymore.
New research indicates that it may help you fall asleep quickly but it harms the quality of sleep you get.
Having a drink before bed leads to a deep sleep for the first half of the night, before you become unsettled and restless for the remainder of the night.
The study shows that a nightcap causes people to wake up earlier than they would have usually done.
Researchers at Akita University in Japan give volunteers three different doses of pure alcohol at three-week intervals and their sleep was tested.
The results also found that too much drink before bed not olny disturbs sleep but could have a significan effect on the body's digestive system and induce other illnesses.
Dr Yohei Sagawa, of Akita University, says: "Alcohol affects overll sleep architecture.
"The result of the assessment shows that drinking leads to insomnia rather than a good sleep."
The results of the study will be published in the November issue of the journal, Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.
