On an isolated stretch of road in the Tibetan mountains, a motorbike skids off the road. Both bike and riders spin off the edge and plunge into a ravine. There is nobody around except an elderly Tibetan peasant.
Whilst a battle ensues between life and death, this Tibetan stranger focuses upon guiding a newly-freed spirit along the new path it must take, and so begins a journey unlike any other.
As a woman revisits her past and the futures of those she must leave behind, she begins to accept not only her death but also her life - and realises that what happens next is within her control.
Bruno Portier was raised a Catholic but is fascinated by Buddhism. He’s not a believer in life after death but wonders why it shouldn’t be true.
Portier encourages us to open our minds and question long-held beliefs. The novel was inspired by Portier’s trip to Tibet in order to make a documentary about the Tibetan monks.
He was the guest of one of the highest-ranking lamas - his Eminence Tai Situpa Rinpoche. Portier spent weeks recording interviews with the monks and listened as they recounted some of the atrocities occuring in Tibet, including tales of torture and massacre.
This Flawless Place Between is a mesmerising and uplifting story which sensitively explores our deepest questions about life, love, and death.
Author and documentary filmmaker Bruno Portier spent twelve years working in Asia as a photographer before returning to France to study for a doctorate in Social Anthropology.
He now combines directing documentary films in Asia and Africa with writing feature articles in ethnography. This Flawless Place Between is his debut novel and he is currently working on a sequel.
