The technology giant has confirmed the app will be available to download from the Xbox official digital store, and comes as the firm works towards merging the Xbox store with the Windows store for its Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

Torrex Pro, a BitTorrent client that is currently on the Windows Store, will be made available on the console, too.

The Finebits OÜ-developed app is currently available on the Windows Store for £6.19 and allows tech enthusiasts to stream video and audio playback.

A Finebits OÜ spokesperson said: "At the present time, we are working on a UWP version of our app Torrex.

"Microsoft allows [developers] to publish torrent clients on its Store (since they are simply the apps to exchange data, which doesn't break any Store rules), so we are planning to release Torrex on all devices supported by UWP including Xbox One and Hololens."

Last month, meanwhile, Microsoft announced plans to discontinue the iconic Xbox 360 console, which was released in 2005.

Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft's Xbox division, said: "The Xbox 360 helped redefine an entire generation of gaming at Microsoft.

"I am incredibly proud of all of the work and dedication that went into development of the Xbox 360 hardware, services and games portfolio over the last decade. And I'm grateful to the fans for their continued passion and support.

"Xbox 360 means a lot to everyone in Microsoft. And while we've had an amazing run, the realities of manufacturing a product over a decade old are starting to creep up on us. Which is why we have made the decision to stop manufacturing new Xbox 360 consoles."
