Microsoft have decided to pull the plug on the game machine - which succeeded the original Xbox - after over a decade to try and modernise their gaming products despite having an "amazing run" with the popular game console.

The head of Microsoft's Xbox division, Phil Spencer confirmed: "The Xbox 360 helped redefine an entire generation of gaming at Microsoft.

"I am incredibly proud of all of the work and dedication that went into development of the Xbox 360 hardware, services and games portfolio over the last decade. And I'm grateful to the fans for their continued passion and support.

"Xbox 360 means a lot to everyone in Microsoft. And while we've had an amazing run, the realities of manufacturing a product over a decade old are starting to creep up on us. Which is why we have made the decision to stop manufacturing new Xbox 360 consoles."

Fans of the soon-to-be extinct product will be able to purchase it will it's in stock, but once they've sold out that will be the end of the console, which was launched in 2005.

Fans of this particular console will still be able to play Xbox 360 compatible games on its predecessor Xbox One.

Those games include 'Gears of War', 'Fallout 3', and 'Fable 2', 'Assassin's Creed 2'.
