Sonic the Hedgehog is getting his own digital showcase on May 27 in which Sega reveal its plans for the company's most popular character.
The Sonic livestream will take place on May 27 and the virtual event will feature appearances from Sega’s Sonic Team and unannounced special guests.
Sonic celebrates his 30th birthday on June 23 and Sega has promised to reveal “a plethora of upcoming projects, partnerships and events spanning the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and beyond”.
Anticipation is rising that a new game will be part of the announcements.
There hasn’t been a new entry in the main 'Sonic' series since 2017’s 'Sonic Forces', with 2D platformer 'Sonic Mania' also coming out that same year. The blue speedster last made pixelated appearances in spin-off titles 'Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020' and 'Team Sonic Racing'.
It has been rumoured that a remaster of Nintendo Wii game 'Sonic Colors' is coming due to a leaked retail listing.
Sonic made his debut back in 1991 in the smash hit Sega Mega Drive game and quickly started to rival Nintendo's Mario character in popularity.
The character has gone on to appear in multiple other games and made his big screen debut in 2020 with Ben Schwartz voicing Sonic and Jim Carrey starring as his arch nemesis Dr. Robotnik and the movie was a box office success.
The sequel film is in development at Paramount Pictures, with a release date of April 8, 2022, whilst new 3D animated series 'Sonic Prime' will stream on Netflix next year.
Sonic Central will stream on May 27 on the official Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube and Twitch channels.
