7. The Joker is killed - Batman: Arkham City
He's a villain that usually manages to evade death at every opportunity, so when Joker finally met his end in Batman: Arkham City, players were left open-mouthed. He would make a return in the conclusion to the trilogy, but simply as a figment of Batman's torturous imagination. Joker brings his own life to a close in the game, slurping as much as the poison up as possible that is dropped on the floor by Bats. It's a strangely emotional scene, as the Caped Crusader tells the Clown Prince that, even after everything he's done, he still would have saved his life, given the opportunity.
6. Nathan Drake's chaotic train ride - Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
To this day, the train wreck scene of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is talked about as one of the most stunning video game moments ever. When the game was remastered for current-gen consoles, it looked even bolder than the original. Always worth a replay, it forced everybody playing to hold their breath, as they cautiously made their way up a wrecked train, eventually to safety.
5. The multiverse reveal - Bioshock Infinite
There are plenty of theories doing the rounds when it comes to the ending of the Bioshock trilogy. When players saw the world reconstructing around them, however, it became clear that the entire timeline had actually been a part of a multiverse, which offered up a whole host of opportunities and exciting possibilities. This moment still to this day blows the mind; make sure to check out the three games if you haven't yet!
4. Project Zero Dawn - Horizon Zero Dawn
Completionists were treated to glimpses of the truth behind the technologically-advanced past in Horizon Zero Dawn, as audio files and scraps of information allowed a glimpse into exactly what Project Zero Dawn was all about. Hoping to deplete and then repopulate the planet, the genius, but frightful minds behind the project turned out to be the very reason that humanity got to continue existing.
3. John Marston's death - Red Dead Redemption
Incredibly likeable and seemingly indestructable, when the power of lawmakers proved to be too much for John Marston, and he was shot dead, Red Dead Redemption fans couldn't help but have tears in their eyes. He was a man we were all willing to succeed, but in the end, the forces working against him managed to take him down for good.
2. She's a girl! - Metroid
Published all the way back in 1986, the original Metroid game stunned players when Samus took off her helmet and revealed that she was in fact a woman! Such action-fronted roles had previously been taken up by men, so to see a female front-and-centre was incredibly groundbreaking.
1. Are we the bad guys? - The Last Of Us
When The Last Of Us came to a close, it was revealed that Ellie was in fact the cure for the zombie virus outbreak. To extract the cure from her however, she would have to be killed by the Fireflys. Upon hearing this, and following the bond Joel had forged with Ellie, he decided that lying to her and killing those who wanted to take her life was the only course of action he could morally take. It's going to be very interesting to see how things sit when the game finally makes its return for the long-anticipated sequel!
