The legendary video game designer has insisted the world is still divided like it was before he made 'Death Stranding', which was intended to bring people together.

In an interview after accepting the New York Games Awards' Legend Award, he said: "The world was becoming divided. People were becoming isolated. So we made 'Death Stranding'.

"Then, after it was released, the coronavirus hit, Brexit became a reality, and there was another [US] presidential election. The world is still very divided.

"But I hope that people can come together, like they do in the game. I hope the world comes together and that we can all live in peace."

Last summer, Kojima opened up on the innovative open world action game - which launched on consoles in 2019 - and insisted its themes were more relevant than ever.

He said at th time: "When I was designing 'Death Stranding' in the concept stage, in the real world America or Europe, I [saw] signs of divide in the world.

"Even though we are all connected via internet, there was a lot of thinking of individualism starting at that time. In 'Death Stranding' it was almost like an alarm I wanted to put into the society of what's going on.

"In 'Death Stranding', [and] people [are] experiencing this actual situation with the pandemic, it's not about physically if you're connected or not, it's a deeper feeling with people's connection.

"With this situation of the pandemic right now, I bet that everyone felt that way about connection with other people.

"That's one of the themes of 'Death Stranding'. The world today, yes I was surprised, but it's important to think about how you connect with other people."
