'We Happy Few' is set to get a movie adaptation.
The indie survival horror game, developed by Compulsion Games, is set to be the next video game to receive a movie adaptation, as the developers have teamed up with dj2 Entertainment.
'We Happy Few' is set in an eerie English town in the 1960s, in an alternative timeline that deviates from history. In this world, Adolf Hitler and the Nazis lost control of Germany during World War II, and the reformed German Empire continued to wage war across Europe, invading and conquering Great Britain.
The town of Wellington Wells, where the game is set, developed a drug called Joy, and the government have imposed a drug-induced happiness to mask a terrifying secret. The story centres around one resident who refuses to take the drug and threatens to uncover the town's gruesome past.
According to Variety magazine, the movie will be produced by 'Pitch Perfect' producers Gold Circle Entertainment, with the company's Paul Brooks producing the feature alongside dj2's CEO Dmitri M. Johnson and Chief Content Officer Dan Jevons. dj2's Stephan Bugaj is serving as the executive producer.
Guillaume Provost, head developer at Compulsion Games, said of the project: "Dmitri, Stephan, and Dan approached us enthusiastically with really solid ideas about how to adapt our game to film while retaining its menace, dark humour, and central themes."
Whilst Dmitri added: "Our commitment is to make a movie that remains true to the source material, while still surprising fans."
No other details are yet known about the project, with no casting announcements or release dates having been made whilst the feature is still in early development.
