Francis Ford Coppola has created a Kickstarter asking for $900,000 to make "an immersive, psychedelic horror RPG".
The award-winning movie director is not known for making video games and so he has got together a team of experts, including 'Wasteland 2' producer Montgomery Markland and 'Fallout: New Vegas' producer Lawrence Liberty, to help realise his ambition of making a game based on 'Apocalypse Now'.
The description of the prospective video game explains: "Unlike a traditional RPG, the emphasis is not choosing dialogue, but rather actions and postures.
"Combat draws from survival horror to emphasise combat avoidance and stealth. This is not 'Call Of Duty' in Vietnam."
Among the other talents involved in making the game include experts who have previously worked on MMOs such as 'Everquest', 'DC Universe Online' and 'PlanetSide'.
The Kickstarter campaign brands itself as being run by video game fans for the benefit of video game players.
However, the Hollywood director will need gamers to be generous if he is to reach his ambitious target.
But if the Kickstarter campaign is successful, the game is slated for a release in late 2020.
Francis, 77, was a central figure of the New Hollywood wave of filmmaking and can list the iconic 'Godfather' series among his directing credits.
