The movie, starring Michael Fassbender and based on the popular video game, was due to be released later this year but has been pushed back to January 6, 2017 in the UK, although it will be released in America on December 21, 2016.

Fassbender will play main character Callum Lynch/ Aguilar and although the film takes the name from the Ubisoft game series, the storyline and character played by the 39-year-old star was specially created for the movie.

The 'Assassin's Creed' game franchise tells the story of the age old battle between the peace-craving Templars and Assassins.

The movie will see Lynch discover he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society when he delves into his past.

Marion Cotillard stars as Sophia Rikkin, the head scientist on the Animus project while Jeremy Irons plays her father Alan Rikkin.

And, although the movie has not yet been released, there are already said to be plans for a sequel.

According to website The Tracking Board, Fassbender looks set to star in and produce the second motion picture in the franchise.

The website states: "That the studio is already laying the groundwork for the sequel is hardly surprising, given the international appeal of both the game and its star, Fassbender.

"But sceptics of video game-based films may interpret this move as a sign of confidence from those involved that, unlike previous attempts to bring popular video game properties to the big screen, 'Assassin's Creed' could not only work - but thrive."
