The 39-year-old actor - who stars in the film version of the popular Ubisoft video game - says the filmmakers were unsure what to do with the game's static chair, as it wasn't cinematic enough, so it is now expected to make an appearance in the game.

He said: "For ages, we were like what are we going to do with the Animus? At one point I thought of this idea where we'd be in a fluid tank, almost like a womb. But what the guys came up with is fantastic. Ubisoft are talking about putting it in their future games."

However, Fassbender admitted he isn't familiar with the original game himself.

He added: "We started in 2011. I sat down with the guys from Ubisoft, and they introduced me to this whole universe. I'd seen billboards and trailers, but I'd never played the game."

And although the film takes place in the same universe as the games, they wanted it to stand alone with a new Assassin and location.

He told Total Film magazine: "I've always said that with these things there's a healthy dose of respect and disrespect. We want to surprise the guys that are familiar with the world and show them something new.

"We were talking about it the other day. If we could find a period, that again, doesn't feel like it's repeating the game. And then you've got to think about how Michael would fit within that period and time. You really can create a whole new palette for the next film. The war between the Templars and the Assassins can be flipped and changed, so it provides some pretty unique takes on where you could take the story."
