This year Google split the list into the top "trending" searches – i.e. those with the most intense periods of interest - and "most searched" terms overall.

Among the highlights were the fact that Paul Walker was the top trending search of the year, after his untimely death following a car crash in November, followed by 'iPhone 5S' and 'royal baby'.

The top "What Is?" search was led by "What is Twerking?" some other more eyebrow-raising questions were “what is my address?”, “What is yolo in French/Spanish?”, “What is spooning, forking and knifing?” and the eternal question “What is the meaning of life?”

The “How to?” category shows that food, job (or money) and self-image are on most of the British people’s minds. This conclusion is drawn from the fact that the top 3 most asked questions were: "How to make pancakes", “How to write a CV?” and “How to lose weight?”

The top trending event of 2013 in the UK was the Grand National, beating out even Andy Murray's Wimbledon win and surprisingly, Eurovision was the third most ‘Googled’ event in the UK.

The most searched celebrity in 2013 was Kim Kardashian, leaving Miley Cyrus and One Direction behind.

EastEnders became the most ‘Googled’ TV show, followed by an American TV series ‘Breaking Bad’ and by British classic – “Coronation Street”.

The most popular films that received the most attention were action packed thrillers: “Man of Steel”, “Iron Man” and “Django Unchained”.

Boris Johnson was the top trending politician, naturally, followed closely by Nick Clegg and David Cameron.
