It seems Boeing has had enough of these unmanned-mini-helicopters, and has developed a weapon to combat them. While there have been few life-threatening drone incidents, drones do seem to be getting in the way. Recently, one curious drone pilot hindered firefighting efforts in California.
Boeing's new laser was demonstrated in New Mexico earlier this week, where they burned holes in a composite UAV shell. Within seconds of operation, the target had a hole burned straight through.
Wired described the laser as: "more like burning ants with a really, really expensive magnifying glass."
The laser is said to be relatively low-cost. Once the system has been built, it would only cost the electricity required to run it.
